Project Withdrawn!

Neighbors,

With yesterday’s Planning Board agenda update we’ve found an attached letter from Winstanley Enterprises, formally withdrawing their application for the special drivethru permits at the Chelmsford Mall. The email continues, “We will not be proceeding with the development of these out-parcels at this time.”

Thanks to everyone who got involved, got yard signs, and followed along for updates. For now, we longer need to worry about drivethru restaurants going in at the Chelmsford Mall.

It’s possible (probable, even) that we will see another proposal to develop these spaces at some point in the future, as we’ve seen proposals in the past from the prior owner of the plaza. Hopefully, any potential future plans to develop the Chelmsford Mall will take Westlands residents into account in a way that adds actual value to the neighborhood without threatening to overwhelm traffic worse than it already is.

This is the last update here on StopChelmsfordMall.org. We will try to keep the website registered but dormant in case it’s needed again at some point in the future. If you’ve got yard signs, please pack them away and enjoy the holidays!

Wonderful job by the Westlands and Chelmsford residents to stop this project!

This is a HUGE win for Chelmsford. I was kind of hoping for the hearing so I could BLAST the developer firm but they knew better they would get made a fool by ALL of us if and when new plans ever do get proposed, we should consider having that spot(s) turned into some kind of health care/emergency walk-in clinic…something that actually builds value FOR the RESIDENTS and the town. I’m proud to live in a town that doesn’t let BS slide. I’m proud of YOU.

I’m very gutted about the latest planning board update! I would just like to push back and say I do think fast casual drive thru or no drive thru establishments do add value to Chelmsford! I just don’t understand as to why most neighbors that had rejected this proposal had decided to move near a commercial zone if there could be potential for fast casual dining? Reading Ma has fast food chains near homes and plus they remodeled their McDonald’s! I’m just glad they have the Kohl’s plaza in Chelmsford!

The developer can build regular restaurants or cafes without drivethrus essentially by right, as long as they comply with the zoning bylaws. This is what Westlands residents who purchased homes near CC zoning consented to.

Luckily anybody who wants fast food from a drivethru can drive 5 mins down 110 into Lowell, or 8 mins to Drum Hill for a very wide selection of fast food.
